As the Crows Fly
Bee is a potter and illustrator based at the Fire Station Creative, in Dunfermline, working under the name As The Crows Fly. Equipped with a pottery wheel and kiln, Bee produces mainly porcelain tableware in a variety of ranges. Hand illustrated wheel-thrown studio ware may have delicate botanical line drawings on calming celadon greens or zingy Art Deco inspired nasturtium illustrations.
The bright slipcast range of pots have a beautiful colour pop and mid-century aesthetic. These are created with coloured porcelain, poured in handmade moulds, then sanded back to the most tactile, smooth, unglazed finish. A range of minimalist monochrome espresso ware, very much influenced by Japanese tea wares, with black and white glaze effects bubbling on the inside of smoothly thrown and polished black and white vessels is the calm foil to all the illustrated work.
As well as the handmade studio ceramics, Bee produces homewares embellished with her original illustrations; incorporating retro bird motifs, stylised botanicals and rich colours. These are all fired in her studio onto Stoke-on-Trent fine bone china table ware and beautifully printed elsewhere in the UK as vibrant cotton tea towels. It's an eclectic and complementary body of work that appeals to many different aesthetic tastes and a wide variety of people.
