Roadside Picnic Ceramics
Ailsa Ferrier (she/her) is a Edinburgh based potter who makes work under the name Roadside Picnic Ceramics.
Ailsa trained as a contemporary sculptor in London, and after over a decade of working in the film industry shifted her attention from the two dimensions of the cinema screen back to the three dimensions of clay.
Her work is informed by a fine art training but is determinedly practical, aiming towards a natural relationship of versatility and beauty. She predominately makes homeware for everyday use, and take inspiration in form and tone from a mix of styles; from clean contemporary lines, mid-century Scandinavian design, to more elaborate and fanciful French Baroque. Her glazes are in a duel complimentary colour palette; one of cobalt and white, and the other a natural and warm blend of greens, pinks and mustard.
As well as continuing to experiment and develop her work, she does commissions for cafes, shops and individuals, as well as more sculptural handmade ceramic pieces and Raku. She also make small batch homemade soap. Ailsa is based at the newly formed Portland Street Pottery in Leith.
