Rachel's Willow Designs
Rachel is a basketmaker and willow sculptor who takes inspiration from the natural world around her studio in Abernethy, Perthshire. She handweaves a wide variety of pieces for the home and garden, and also offers bespoke commissions. She also teaches willow weaving workshops at the teaching space in her studio and other locations by request. With her sculptures, Rachel likes to capture the charm and character of each animal by studying their form and physicality. By experimenting with different varieties of willow and a range of weaves, Rachel uses the natural beauty of the willow to provide texture and interest, giving each basket its own personality. She is a firm believer that the functional should be beautiful too and each piece is unique with its own personality. The sustainability and positive environmental impact of willow is key to the business. Each plant is coppiced and harvested annually for many years, absorbing carbon and providing a habitat for wildlife as it grows.
