Kelda Young
Kelda Young is a designer and maker from the Scottish Highlands and is currently based in Wasps Studios, Glasgow. She creates sustainably conscious contemporary jewellery using recycled precious metals, each piece unique due to the nature of the handcrafted process.
Kelda looks to her own fragmented memories and photographs for inspiration, abstracting forms and elements to create compositions. Her work celebrates the contrast and harmonies found between nature and the manmade world, past and present. Often combining bold, striking shapes with intricate, organic details achieved by using techniques such as chasing, hand engraving and high-pressure embossing.
Kelda hollow forms most of her work to maintain the striking scale of the finished piece whilst allowing the jewellery or objects to still be wearable. This along with the enticing softness of pushed metal, encourages people’s curiosity and to engage with the pieces – there is an element of surprise as scale usually coincides with weight. The connection to material and the physical process of making is essential to the success of her work which allows for an intuitive approach to making and designing.
