Dorothy Black Art
Dorothy Black has exhibited extensively and built a reputation for powerful draughtsmanship, dramatic composition, bold colour and pattern over the last 4 decades since graduating with BA Honours in Drawing & Painting and a Postgraduate Diploma from Edinburgh College of Art. Her work is held in many public and private collections in the UK and abroad.
Best known for her dramatic figurative pieces, where the striking pose of the female figure is contrasted with the freer painterly handling of the dress, she has more recently applied the same vigour to botanical studies, inspired by her rural surroundings.
Working in mixed media, she combines materials to create eye-catching effects. Dorothy's work contrasts the expressive and graphic elements to achieve impact. She is always open to new inspirations and experimental techniques, continuing to enjoy new challenges.
Strong draughtsmanship is always evident, whether based on figure, still life or botanical studies. Pattern and print are often used alongside other motifs.
Work can range from small 10cm x 10cm box canvases up to larger scale 1m x 1.5m pieces. Commissions are always welcome.
