Christina Hirst Jewellery

Christina is a jewellery maker based at Coburg House Studios in Leith, Edinburgh. She spent her childhood growing things and making things, then took these two passions to Duncan of Jordanstone College, Dundee, where she studied Jewellery and Metalwork.

Her work is inspired by a love of nature, she experimented with many different metalworking techniques during her degree to try to achieve an organic quality in metal. This led her to investigate a then new material called Precious Metal Clay. It is comprised of minute particles of silver suspended in an organic binder and water. The material handles just like ceramic clay. Once fired the organic binder burns away and the silver particles fuse together, so the piece becomes pure metal.

After setting up her studio in 1998 she continued to experiment with metal clays. She makes exhibition pieces and one-offs using silver clay and teaches short courses and one day workshops in creative use of this intriguing material.

Through galleries, shops and online, she also sells more affordable production ranges which are cast from masters modelled in metal clay. These combine metal with lustrous freshwater pearls and textured or subtle earthy toned semi precious stones to produce beautiful jewellery.
