Imagine North

Moira Third works from her home studio in Glenmuick, a small highland glen in Scotland’s Cairngorms National Park. Inspired by a romantic sense of North she makes embroidered wall mounted and 3D artworks which are both overtly minimal and contemplative. The poetics of colour and space, words or lines from a remembered song or story are all distilled into ideas at the heart of her work.
She lost her hearing after a viral infection a few years ago, her world suddenly became silent and insular, she tries to convey this silence in every made piece.

Moira begins each piece in her Sketchbook or iPad, then paints onto artists canvas before layering with millions of tiny stitches, using just the needle, thread and straight stitch on her domestic sewing machine. Moira has been stitching in this way for many years, mastering the technique whilst paring down the process, the stitch becoming absolute, each unique finished piece records her movements as the maker and not the automation of the machine.

Moira studied Fine Art at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen and has both an Honours and a Masters degree from her time there
